Royal Python

by Mark Amey

Common name in USA:

Ball Python

Scientific name:

Python regis

Distribution:

Africa

Size:

3 to 4 feet

Natural Habitat

This species inhabits the grassland, savannah and wooded plain regions of Africa. When captive, adults will require a 40 gallon enclosure. Or 4' x2' x 2' vivarium.

Behaviour

Usually quite docile and shy. Will roll up into a ball if disturbed. This snake in my opinion is a good captive if handled infrequently. If you want a python to handle there are many others to choose from.

Captive environment

Provide a basking area with access to a cooler zone and dark hiding places. Use reptile heating pads under tank, or ceramic/heat cable for 24-hour heat, always connected to a thermostat. Substrates that can be used are newspaper, hemp, orchid bark, pine shavings, etc.

Temperature

Day temperature should be gradient from 78 to 90 F. Maintain night temperature range between 72-80 F.

Humidity

This species requires moderate to high levels of humidity.

Water Requirements

Provide a large fairly deep bowl for drinking and soaking.

Nutritional requirements

This species is a carnivore (meat eater). Feed appropriate sized rodents (mice, hamsters, rats). This species is a very particular feeder.

Note: If at all possible please purchase a captive bred specimen and not a less expensive wild farmed animal for the sake of the snake and our environment.
