Poison Arrow Frog

by Mark Amey

Scientific name:

Dendrobates spp.

Distribution:

Northern South America

Size:

1 inch

Natural Habitat

This terrestrial species inhabits the tropical rain forest. When kept in captivity, adults will require a 10 gallon aquarium or other suitable enclosure.

Behaviour

Usually quite docile and shy. Do not handle with bare hands as their skin contains toxic chemicals that the frog uses for defence. Treat as a Dangerous animal, the levels of toxins vary, more info available in England through the Dendrobate Society.

Captive environment

Use full spectrum lighting 12-14 hours per day. Provide several climbing areas on branches, logs, & plants.

Temperature

Use a low wattage heat lamp in well ventilated enclosure. Day temperature should be gradient from 76-84 degrees F. Maintain night temperature range between 74-79 degrees F.

Humidity

This species requires moderate to high levels of humidity. This is most easily achieved in two ways, use a repti-falls commercial water fall, [ a Mark tip] or a large glass jar with a aquarium heater inside and a perforated lid {remember metal rusts}. This will also act as a heat source in the enclosure.

Water Requirements

Provide large shallow bowl for drinking and soaking. Use only dechlorinated water. Do not mist animal directly. Mist enclosure every other day to maintain humidity level.

Nutritional requirements

Always offer variety for proper nutrition. Dust food with calcium and vitamins. Small insects such as fruit flies and pinhead crickets are an ideal food sources.
