Natural Habitat

Inhabits semi-desert, mixed woodland, and scrubland habitats and is diurnal. When captive, adults will require a 60 gallon enclosure.

Behaviour

Most will become tame with regular handling. Males can become territorial, separate from other males. Difficult to sex. Docile and friendly, easy to handle.

Captive Environment

Use full spectrum lighting 12-14 hours per day. Provide a basking area with access to a cooler zone. Provide rocky basking areas, likes crevices and caves.

Temperature

Day temperature should be gradient from 75 to 90 degrees F. Maintain night temperature range between 70-75 degrees F. Use reptile heating source for 24-hour heat connected to a thermostat.

Humidity

This species requires low to moderate levels of humidity.

Water Requirements

Provide a large fairly deep bowl for drinking and soaking.

Nutritional Requirements

This omnivore prefers arthropods and love snails. {Caution only feed snails from poison free areas} Likes dark greens (collard, mustard, turnip, dandelions). Also eats some pink mice/rats, insects and various species of worms. Supplement leafy diet with (squash, sprouts, and zucchini). 10-15% of diet may include fruits (papayas, mangoes, figs).

Note:   An excellent pet animal but not regularly available, wild caught gigas should be avoided if possible and purchase a captive bred animal.
